Start the conversation early
Ask your returning colleague what would help them feel prepared, rather than assuming their needs. Agree how and when to stay in touch, respecting their preferences and time away.
Make expectations clear
Discuss responsibilities, priorities and any changes that took place during leave. A thoughtful handover and realistic initial objectives can help someone rebuild confidence without feeling they need to prove themselves immediately.
Keep support personal
Each return is different. Explore flexible arrangements, access to specialist coaching and regular check-ins. Listen to what is working and revisit arrangements as circumstances evolve.
